Hello all, Malleable Jangle should be online very soon. A new job and specific problems have slowed things down a little but work is being done steadily. The good news is that we ventured out to our first poetry reading in well over a year. Baby Ben yelled out a few babbles from the audience. His first poetry reading and he made lots of friends; entirely unlike his father's first reading. Well that's all water under the bridge and we hope to be getting out a lot more in the near future.

Hello from Warburton Melbourne Victoria Australia

We are back from Cairns and are living in Warburton.
We decided that we hated Cairns and that it was just all too silly so we moved back to Victoria after two weeks.
It was the most expensive trip our furtiture has ever undertaken. A two week holiday fifth class.
We just beat the Cyclone home
We thought we were going to die on the plane ride home
Thank you to all submitters to Malleable Jangle i really appreciate you patience.
It has been virtually impossible to do any work on it as we have been homeless and without computer for 6 weeks but we have just got a house in Warburton so things should return to some sense of sanity soon i hope.

I love feeling cold in the morning; such sensible weather.

Baby Ben Born

After 6.5 hours labour with only gas for pain relief Melissa gave birth to our baby son Benjamin Wyatt Lane. He had a few lung complaints and was transferred over to Monash medical Centre where he could receive intensive care. He has responded wonderfully and should be home soon. He is breastfeeding and i gave him his first bath yesterday.

This section is for a poem up to 200 lines in length. First prize:
$700; second prize: $200 (Australian dollars) The judge for the poetry
competition this year is Stephen Edgar, recipient of the inaugural
Australian Book Review poetry prize.

* The Write Stuff Short Story Competition (judge: GIles Hugo)

This section is for a short story of 5,000 to 10,000 words (i.e no
fewer than 5,000 and no more than 10,000 words). First prize: $700;
second prize: $200 (Australian dollars) The judge. Giles Hugo, is a
journalist, writer, co-editor of The Write Stuff.

The deadline for both competitions is 30 June 2005 and entries must be

Saul Bellow dead

Saul Bellow wrote a slim novel called Seize the Day. For me it encapsulates the Stones' maxim "You can't always get what you want, but sometimes you find, you get what you need." [or something like that] A human story about frustration acknowledged, and then finally accepted with calm resolution. If only we could bypass the frustration, and move straight into the smooth, calm, resolution that we inevitably reach. By having the protagonist lust after the fluctuations of lard on the commodity market Saul Bellow showed, that the materialism of society, and our desire for it, can and often is absurd. Saul is dead now i hear, oh well, we all have to die, don't we?

DVD watching

Hello, Mel's got a baby in her tummy by the way.

OK did a bit of the old DVD watching on the weekend. Firsty, the Football Factory, a soccer hooligan film described as Fightclub meets Trainspotting; a pretty good description of this film. What i found noteworthy, was the central character who refused to change. Refreshing in a world of Hollywood endings. Even after he has been beaten to a pulp he asks himself, "whether it was all worth it", and then replys, "course it was!". Another addition to the football thug genre which authorities must be dreading. In many ways it is a subtle film which does show the meaninglessness of football violence, but it may be glorified by some. I particulary liked the way one of the sociopathic leaders of the "firm" owned a florist shop, and delt with beauty during the week but come Saturday... well that was another story.

Mad Max, the original. Well what a cheap film. The titles very basic, and the film score by Brian May is dreadful, it's like they got the films mixed up. Completely innappropriate music, and it sounds like it has been played by the local brass band, there are no strings at all, the lack is noticeable. The language and dialogue is interesting, sort of a tough pseudo Aus-slang Shakespearean dialect. Humourous moment when Mad Max's wife is being chased through a forest, and a couple of pidgeons appear in her face from out of nowhere.

Mean Girls, is a film which shows how our elaborate social customs are really just a mask for our animal instincts. It is supprising how many act in society. Mel said the other day "It isn't supprising that the ones with the most money, are natuarally the greediest."

And Fargo, i just love the way they say Yah for yeah, very endearing.

And Scream, genre referencial and silliness.

The Poet Watch have awarded Malleable Jangle with the Poet's Award. It's Malleable Jangle's first award and one which i am very proud of.

Poetclub

The poetry reading performs an important function in society, albeit, a grossly undervalued function. In years gone by, the carnival freak show performed much the same function. Way back then, citizens would visit the freak show as a way of balancing any feelings of inadequacy they might be having. What some have called the: “At least I’m not like them feeling”. This feeling helped citizens feel more at ease with themselves. Today the poetry reading performs that very same task.

I used to go to football games as a way of feeling more at ease with myself. I have never seen such a bigger concentration of freaks as what I’ve seen in a football crowd. I would sit silently amongst them, searching, searching for the biggest freak. And then I would find him, spit and globulets of meat pie flying from his open mouth, shouting insanely at the umpire. He would become my Powerfreak, which I would concentrate intently upon. I would repeat the mantra: “You are not him – you are not him”.

But I wanted more, Football freaks are not enough, anyone can become a Football freak. I was after a special kind of freak. And I found that freak at the poetry reading. Poetry freaks are better than Football freaks because your Poetry freak takes itself seriously. They strut and prance and preen, every one a genius. Well you can imagine my delight at discovering the poetry reading. Now there is not a weekend that goes by where I don’t attend a reading. I concentrate on a very different kind of freak now: the Powerpoet freak variety. And still the mantra can be heard within my head: “You are not him/her – you are not him/her”. Concentrate on finding your Powerpoet freak.

Brain which side are u on?

i have been teaching math [which i have to learn again]. i'm interested in whether the exercising of that side of the brain will have any affect on the other side, and whether it will affect how i write? i notice after i have figured out a few problems my brain really hurts, kind of how your body hurts after a good physical workout; a not too unpleasant experience. i wonder if the brain releases endorphines after/during mental exercise? I'll have to tell u my button up my nose story one day.

"A most gifted writer" Samuel Beckett.

I have just fininshed Christie Malry's own Double Entry by B.S. Johnson. I know the title sounds rude but it's not what you think, if indeed you even think that, i don't know, i'm not here to accuse anyone of having a dirty mind. Anyway the "double entry" refers to the standard accounting system devised by Florentine merchants and first recorded in book form by the Benedictine Monk, Fra Luca Bartolomeo. This system is pretty basic, just a ledger system really; debits on one side, credits on the other. Christie Malrey applies this system to his life. The ledger must balance so when Christie's superviser at work calls him by the wrong name he decides to score a scratch along the side of the bank building he works in. As we progress through the novel the credits become more brazen, cynanide poiosoning, bomb threats, and general mayham is created by Christie in his attempts at balancing the books.

"Christie himself wondered: am i not overdrawn? What wrong has society done me that i can offset more that twenty thousand deaths against it? Everything,

he decided after a pause, everything."

Christie Malry's own Double Entry is a novel that self references to the extreme. B.S. Johnson is continually letting the reader know that he is creating the novel, and that it is just a novel, an invention, and that he will take it where he wants, not where you want it to go. It just so happens that i'm pretty pleased with how, and where he takes it; i like the way this novel is produced. The reader is given a hint about the novel with the book cover. It is the title of the novel but the letters are on the keys of an old typewriter. Cristie's life is spead on the keys. On other keys there is: a skull and crossbone, a beaker of liquid, a letter, a phone symbol; a really clever cover for a clever funny book. Oh, and if you are after the correct way to make the perfect Molotov Cocktail, this book provides the recipe. Politically and literary, Christie Malry's own Double Entry is a subversive and revolutionary book.

Ran over a huge Tiger snake today before it was too late to avoid we looked back to see it wobbling off the road. Felt sorry for it, all it was doing was a spot of sunbathing. It was over a metre long and pretty thick.

as you can probably see i'm having problems with my links. The html code is exactly the same for all of them yet there seems to be gaps toward the end of the links list. i haven't a clue why this is happening. if someone knows why? let me know, please.
been working on the Malleable Jangle website today, it's looking good.
also went and visited Jamie McTainsh, who is featured in Malleable Jangle issue 1. He showed us how to mow the lawn with the hand pusher cylinder type of lawn mower. Interesting stuff. Tested out the new Flymo i think it was, nice to handle and so light. There was another model which i mowed around a little with called a "ginge" it was an orange model, looked nice, but for me, handled a bit sloppy, and a little heavy. At one point we had all five out and various bit of lawn were getting a good mow. Jamie demonstrated how you must mow it one way, then the other, then mow it and mow it and mow it again, and then go the other way a couple of times. well what a delightful patch of lawn it produced. last time i went round there he was on a billy cart in the middle of the road with an old garden blower vac in his hands pointing it at the road trying to get some jet propulsion to that cart; i gave him a push.

new design

An interesting time here, and at the moment in the Malleable Jangle office. There is a new layout and design being conceptualised right now this very minute as we speak. You have probably come to expect a different designs for each monthly issue of Malleable Jangle, however, this one is going to be really something special. The conceptal design team have been working overtime to create indivduality made with a capital I. Expect Australian heartland fused with European nostalgic avant garde, with a little bit of oxymoron thrown in just for the effect of the coloured lights. Just a primer and a hint to what you'll get to get you all excited enough to beget, i'm excited i can hardly contain myself, i'm spilling over to the next page. got to go. Robert Lane.

Phantasmagoria update

Yesterday's exhibition opening was a success, Mel sold five paintings, everyone had a good time, and we ate left over pizza for dinner, and we've still got lots of wine left. They will hang for three weeks now, hopefully they will be sold, although i want the painting of the four boobed woman and psycho puppies on acid.

Dynamics in poetry

I've been thinking about dynamics, and poetry, and how punk music succeeds in creating intensity regularily though often poetry doesn't. Punk music has a reputation as being pretty flat as far as dynamics go. No so, and i'm talking about the original punk music not the derivative pop that makes a poor pass for it now. When i think of New Order's Transmisson, a John Coltrane solo, the Buzzcock's Everybody's Happy Nowadays i think of a upward curve that only ends when the song ends. It builds, and it is this build that i've been searching for in my poetry and alas it has thus aluded me so far. Maxim Gorky wrote a short story about a prisoner which i think approaches this kind of intensity, but for the most i think poetry falls short. It maybe the problem of applying a musical discourse to a poetic one. Poets have come to expect bad poetry from songwriters so why haven't i resigned myself to a dynamic flatness and intensity to poetry? It can be done and it will be something that i will always have in my consiousness. We can rebuild poetry into a dynamic song.

Well the big day of the exhibiton is tomorrow. I've been baking pizza all day, we got vego and salami one. I still need to work on the speech though. i was thinking about a baby metaphor. About the incubation and birth of ideas but i haven't really had time yet. mel's been in bed all day with the dreaded morning sickness. i ate a wild apple from one of the old trees along the Warburton trail and it didn't taste too bad, kind of a Granny Smith but a little more tarte. perfect for cooking or maybe cider. Took the dog for a walk. it all starts at 1:00pm tomorrow. I haven't watched a movie for ages. I'll see if i can post a picture of some of Mel's artwork, bye for now, Robby.

The rebirth of Phantasmagoria

Today we hung Mel's [my partner] paintings at the Warburton Arts Centre. The name of Mel's exhibiton is PHANTASMAGORIA.

Here's the Online Etymological Dictionary definition:

phantasmagoria:
1802, name of a "magic lantern" exhibition brought to London in 1802 by Philipstal, the name an alteration of Fr. phantasmagorie, said to have been coined 1801 by Fr. dramatist Louis-Sébastien Mercier, from Gk. phantasma "image" + second element probably a Fr. form of Gk. agora "assembly" (but this may have been chosen more for the dramatic sound than any literal sense). Transf. meaning "shifting scene of many elements" is attested from 1822.

The Phantasmagoria exhibition reflects this context because Mel's work is an eclectic mix of the mythical, fantastical, earthy, and metaphysical subject matter.

Well now you know what it's all about. Mel is suffering from morning sickness at the moment so she spent most of the time lying on the floor directing me where to hang the paintings. They should call it 24hr sickness, rather that morning sickness because it seems to linger for the whole of the day and well into the night. It look like at the moment the only thing the can stop it is sleep. however one of the symptoms is [yes you guessed it] insomnia.

Anyway they're all hung now, so all we've got to do now is make the food for the opening, and then turn up on Sunday and have a good time. I'm in the middle of preparing a speech for the opening.

Said Gough just the other day, and it's as hot as to blast the balls off a kangaroo, i'm talking Australian there, it's been a bonza beaut day today, but it's been a scorcha, a suffer in ya jocks kinda day, where you just sit around in ya undies moaning about the heat. My girlfriend likes to wear my undies for a reason i don't know, but then again i don't know why i like to wear hers. Oppps sorry i just thought i'd remind you of how cosmopolitan us Australians are, not that i am, but just look at Dame Edna Everage, that's one hot sophisticated babe. But i am rambling, and we were talking about the weather. Me and Mel went to the St Andrew's martket today in the hope of selling some books but we didn't get a stall, there were so many there. We nearly ran over a kangaroo on the way, Mel reakons they wait until the hear a car and then play chicken and i believe her. Anyway, it was nice chatting to you and keep the submissions coming and i really would like to read some articles about how you write such original poetry. Bye for now, Robby. Well it's been six days since that last post. malleable jangle has received many submissions which is extremely encouraging. I performed along with many others at the Monsalvat Poetry Festival which was a hoooooot. A great job done by the organizers, it must have been a logistical nightmare. The new colours and design for Malleable Jangle issue 2 are coming along nicely. And now i've had enough of talking so here's a picture for ya...

blastoff - yes it's here malleable jangle issue 1. hope you all like it, i would really appreciate any constructive criticism as this is my first attempt at an online poetry journal there may well be teething problems but i am sure with your help they will be sorted out. Also, i would really love to read some poetry related articles especially on poetics. Submissions for issues 2 are still being sought, as i have mentioned on the site, this issue will be a lot more international in its content. a big thanks to all who have supported this project with submissions. all the best, robert lane.
